honoring Dr. Cheatwood

In a world where true compassion and selfless service can feel increasingly rare, Dental Vision Mission founder Gayle Cheatwood, DDS, FADI, FICD, stands out as a shining example of what it means to serve with heart, purpose, and unwavering dedication. The CDA Foundation honored Dr. Cheatwood with the 2024 Humanitarian Award—recognizing a remarkable career defined not only by clinical excellence but by an extraordinary commitment to advancing oral health in communities that need it most.

Based in Holtville, California, Dr. Cheatwood has built a respected dental practice, but his passion for humanitarian outreach took root long before his professional career began. While still a student at Creighton University School of Dentistry—where he graduated cum laude in 1975—he embarked on his first mission trip in 1974. That experience lit a spark that would shape his life’s work.

Over the past several decades, Dr. Cheatwood has led and participated in more than 140 mission trips, delivering essential dental care to underserved populations across the globe. His efforts have extended far beyond the dental chair, helping to build healthier futures for thousands of individuals. With this award, the CDA Foundation celebrates not only a lifetime of service, but a legacy of compassion, generosity, and global impact.

“In the fields of Oaxaca, Mexico, where I first joined him in 2016, I witnessed firsthand the profound impact of his work. It wasn’t just about treating dental ailments; it was about restoring smiles and self-esteem, educating communities and training others to continue this noble mission. The ripple effect of his teaching efforts can be seen in the numerous colleagues he has trained in remote, portable dentistry practices, innovation being his hallmark.”
